Toys for Tots Makes Dreams Come True

By: Shelia Williams

Orlando Fl-- Toys for Tots is a U.S. Marine Corp program dedicated to collecting and delivering toys to children who either doesn't have a home of their own, doesn't have any parents, or their family are just in a financial crisis.

This year the organization has a mission. Their mission is to make give hope and joy to boys and girls in the country by delivering toys to unwrap on either Christmas Day, on the seven days of Kwanzaa, or on Hanukkah.

The Walt Disney Company is a proud supporter of this organization and is promoting all of their employees to participate in this by asking either to donate an unwrapped new toy or volunteer. Or what they can VoluntEAR. So far Walt Disney is a two-star partners who has either contributed at least one hundred thousand dollars in cash or five hundred thousand dollars in toys.

Other partners like Office Depot and The Cocoa Cola Company has also donated around that amount too.

On the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation website it announces it's productivity from 1991 to 2005, the foundation supplemented local toy collections with 64.5 million toys that valued at $344 million. Concurrently, the Foundation provided over $3.9 million worth of promotion and support materials, which enable local Toys for Tots coordinators to conduct more effective local campaigns.

Toys for Tots began in 1947. It started with Bill Hendricks,a USMCR (U.S. Marine Corp. Reserve) and a couple of other Reservies in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5, 00 toys to needy children. Of course the idea came from his wife when she suggested that he should start one.

Orlando, FL- All the way from Queensland, Australia a pro-golfer is next in line to join Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour for 2009.

Sarah- Jane Kenyon, age 24, plays professional golf in the Duramed FUTURES tour. She joined the tour on January 20, 2005; a year after she became professional. Kenyon made her way all the way from Austrailia to the United States to challenge her skills as a golfer. "The United States is the best place for better learning experiences," says Kenyon at the Valencia Voice conference in Orlando, Florida on Nov. 10.

Like other star atheletes, Kenyon just didn't pick up a golf club at a very young age and started playing golf. Kenyon tried another sport; swimming. She did swimming before she got involved in golf, but her father played golf so she started playing with him and the rest is in the present.

"I always wanted to play some kind of professinal sport," says Kenyon, and her wish was granted. In 2002 Kenyon was announced the Australian Jr. Champion.

But fame and the life of golf is not the only thing going foward for Kenyon. In the conference she announces that she is getting married on January 10, 2009 back in Australia to Duane Smith, also from Australia.

"That was a big surprise." Says Kenyon as she talked to Duramed FUTURES Tour's Lisa D. Mickey, " We've been dating for 5 years, but we had never spoken about it and it was kind of an untouched topic. He didn't say anything and I didn't want to scare him, but he proposed on friday night of our tournament in Hammond, Ind. He took me to a Chicago Food Festival and he proposed to me at the top of the ferris wheel at the Navy Pier down on the water. I was taking photos and wasn't paying any attention. He asked me if I'd marry him and I was so shocked, I forgot that I was supposed to say yes. He was on one knee and everything in the ferris wheel and he said, 'Will you please say yes so I can get up?' That was a big deal because he is afraid of heights. It was quite unexpected."

Kenyon has a couple of tournaments lined up for her in the LPGA like the SBS in Hawaii which will be her starter in 2009. But right now she is focusing on her wedding plans and "hopefully a home in Orange County where we practice."

Downtown Disney goes Artistic

Report by: Shelia Williams

Kissimmee, Fl- Artwork fills the pathway of Downtown Disney as artists display their talents and show off their skills personally on Nov. 7 in the Festivals of the Masters at Downtown Disney.

"I call this piece Pablo because that is the name of my dog," says 23 year-old Sarah Johnson from San Andreas, California as she introduce her photographs to the grouping tourists. Each artist has his or her's on space to talk about and have their own art show.

Disney has this festival each year. "It would be hard to display your artwork at Disney," Says Johnson after her presentation, " but everything I take a picture of is real and it's there when I have a camera. It's basically just pictures of my life."

The festival featured sampled foods from the different restaurants and activities like face painting and learning how animation characters was made. Chalk work covering 6,000 sq. ft of walkway.

"I personally don't pay attention to this sort of stuff," says Dion Miller, a tourist from Winona, Mississippi, " but my girl is interested in it, so I have to pretend I'm interested in it to keep her happy."

This year marks it's 33rd year starting from Nov. 1, 1975 as the Art Festival at the Village.

"My two favorite things art and Disney World all in one place. It's great," Says 12 year-old Dana Bell from Ramhurst, Georgia,"Now only if my mom can buy me that Tinker Bell pillow I want, I'll be the best vacation ever."

Game Night

The students of the Student Government Association (SGA) gave the students of Valencia’s West Campus the time to show their gaming skills on Tuesday Oct.21 in the cafeteria.

Game Night started at 5:00pm and ended at 9:00pm, giving more students who had classes time to come out and enjoy the event. “We created this event to give the students a break from the everyday norm. I think we study hard so we need to play hard,” says TJ Cole, President of SGA west campus.

A little over 65 students came out to Game Night and more continuous came and left. “This did turn out to be what I expected it to be. It’s not about the number of people showing up, it’s about the quality of people. It’s about students having fun,” says Cole.

Students including Racha Farmar, Nichole Walz, and Marcus Moore played board games like Sorry, Monopoly, and operation. They had video games on the second floor including a few fighting games and a Guitar Hero game. This was also the time when SGA hosted their first
Madden NFL Tournament.

“I came here by accident. I thought I had a meeting in the next room, but I’m glade I came though,” says Nichole Walz, “The pizza from Papa Johns was a bonus for me.”

The students engaged in conversations with each other, taught each other how to play games, and snacked on goods like cookies, chips, and party mixes. With Valencia having no sports, making an event like this is what this college needs in order to get students to come together and connecting with one another.

“I just wanted to have fun and get out of the house,” says Marcus Moore and Racha Farmar. They were found playing a card game called UNO.

SGA will be hosting another Game Night in the month of November. Then starting in the spring term they will have a Game Night once a month. “The events are all ways going to be better than the pervious one. It wouldn’t be like SGAWC if we didn’t raise the bar every time,” Says Cole

READY, SET, PREPARE

By: Shelia Williams

Orlando,Fla-- "What's the question that you will ask yourself when you take the ACT or SAT Math?" Question coming from 39 year-old Renee Champion.

Champion is the middle and high school math and health instructor over at West Oaks Academy. But on Oct. 8, she took the role of SAT/ACT Math prep instructor over in the main library in Downtown Orlando. " Math is challenging. It's like fitting pieces to a puzzle and I like puzzles." Says Champion.

17 high school students from different schools showed up that day to this seminar. " I want to do better and score higher on my ACT's so I can get into a better college," says 17 year-old Sarah Carter from Jones High School, " Plus, my mother made me come."

The seminar started at five o'clock and lasted one full hour. " I came up with this seminar to further promote the advancement of mathematical functions to our youth." Says Champion after the seminar.

The seminar had covered Algebra I problems and solutions to show how to go about solving them. She had interactive activities for the students to have hands on experience.

16 year-old Jason Harris, from Boone High School, said that he really enjoyed this event." It helped boost me up and it brought back things to my rememberance that I have forgotten--building my foundation." Says Harris, "That's what I came here for. To gain more in this class so I won't fail on the SAT and ACTs when I go take them for the first time."

The seminar ended with a quiz for the students where everyone passed it. As Champion walks out of the class she says, " This was a great success. I should do this again one day...One day."

Party For Child Connection

By: Shelia Williams
Reporter

KISSIMEE, FL-A block party for the children of Central Florida Parkway has men, women, and children running in excitement.

On Sunday, September 21, 2008 the parents of this street thought that children needed to get in touch with one another with food, music, and games. Terri Butler of Orlando, Florida, the organizer, had this to say:
"The parents and I had to take it back old school and show these kids what fun really was back then for us." She also added, " With no guns or gangs involved."

The day was a partly clouded
and that signaled the neighborhood balloon fight. And as it started to rain, that didn’t stop the balloons from flying. Seeing children and adults teaming with one another and in the mist of all this.

"This was a great idea, because it brings everyone in the neighbor closer together like one big family." Says 22 year-old Spencer Harrison, who is a resident of this street.

Actually Butler says that this event was suppose to be something different. " It’s my daughters birthday and my step son’s birthday is 4 days away, and also it had happened to be my neighbors son birthday." Says Butler, " So we just brought it together, and then we decided to invite the whole block and call it something new, while still celebrating their birthdays."

Mostly everyone seemed to had fun doing all the games, like the dance contest, and different arts and crafts projects at different front yards. The day ending with a game of all-ages invited kick ball. With the final score being 10 to 9.

17 year-old, Sharnae Butler of Polk County Florida, had this to say," This party was a good idea because before, I didn’t know half this kids here." Ending with, "I had fun."

Finding Myself

Finding myself in this.... This white snow which melts in the Spring. Where my person burns for more... More to smile the day away. To fly which is I. High above what I call sky. For my voice to lift...Lift every voice and sing my way into your heart. Which mine has broken...Broken the mirror image of myself to find a wall of nothing. What must one do to find oneself...Self is to look beyond the clouds and pray.

AIDS

After weeks and months
I wanted you more and more
We're a perfect match
It's something we both can't ignore.

We move the same way
We act like real twns
That's why we know
That it's ok.

You let me know you
And in return
I let you feel me
Now we're one
You will see.

I'm stuck on you
I won't let you go
My love for you is in view
I'll propose to you and you won't say no.

We'll have a little one
They will be like us
Full of everything we are
That will be a must.

My love for you spreads everyday
From you, our kids, to our children's kids, and more
Just from being with you my love is weighed
Forever we will sore.

Til death do us part.

Relaxation

Dream about the summer times,
Trees and flowers with funny rhymes.
Sweet breeze of the country side,
Out in the open field where birds can fly.
Let my mind wonder away,
To a place where I like to stay.
Feel free and easy,
Relax with the view of the seas.
Singing the song of love,
While watching a dove.
Fly by,
Why fly,
So high,
I can still see it,
Even in the sun a bit.
With the ocean whispering sweet nothings in my ear
I toast a Corona Lite which is my beer.
Seeing the sunset,
As the painted sky gets wet.
The color merge together,
Such a sight is forever.
Only in the mind of what is real,
What is sealed,
Now is healed.
My place of relaxation is over this hill.

The Tall Woman National Anthem

Look at me.
Do you see what I see?
When I look in the mirror and it reflects me.
A tall woman.
Greater than the average height.
Perfect in every sight.
Have a walk like a model.
That makes the boys wanna HOLLA!!
'Cause I'm a tall woman.
I am dime,
But I do have a mind.
With the words I speak,
I can make things happen.
I can make you or break you.
You figure out which one you wanna do.
'Cause I'm a tall woman.
I'm stylin' and profilin' on myspace.
I can show my stuff,
But what's the rush.
Lean wit it, rock wit it.
There ain't nothin' I can't wit it.
'Cause I'm a tall woman.
My height is invincible.
So don't think I'm invisible.
I'm a sky scrapper.
I'll yell to a crowd in a stadium.
For this is the Tall Woman National Anthem.

Be Mine

Please just say my name
Say I'm the one you love
The one you want for the rest of your life
To see me each morning
And each night
To can't live without hearing my voice
Every hour on the hour
To care for me
To long to hold me
To feel my skin on yours
The chills you get just from hearing me breath
The swelling feeling inside of you
Yerning to come out and embrace me
Kiss me
Love me
To know I'm safe for another day
To spare me the pain of life
To rescue me from myself
Saying you're always there for me
And you really are
Loving my smile
My eyes
My body and mind
To be mine and only mine
Be my valentine
All day everyday til death do us part.
